Bremont release a new Limited Edition MB Viper based on the Special Project housing created to test the ENG300 movement with Martin Baker

In October Last year and by invitation only, we got very early sight and hands on with a one-off special project development housing that Bremont had created to allow the ENG300 to be fixed to the cockpit ‘dashboard’ of a Martin-Baker live ejection ‘simulator’. The test instrument was then developed further with the addition of forged carbon fibre lugs so that it could be affixed to an ejection manikin, and resulted in the ‘Viper’ prototype.

This special platform was then used to put the ENG300 movement through the rigorous schedule of environment testing conditions that Martin-Baker deploys across its suite of fighter ejection seats. This included Live Ejection Testing, Zoom Temperature Climb Testing, Extreme Temperature Endurance, High Altitude Testing and Salt Fog Testing. Needless to say the ENG300, protected by Bremont’s patented Anti-Shock movement mount, passed with flying colours and maintained impeccable time.

Bremont Co-Founder Nick English comments: “When Martin-Baker first approached us in Bremont’s very early days, it wasn’t a branding exercise, it was with a vision of creating the definitive aviation watch. The testing that they could offer was something previously untried or tested in this industry, it was entirely unparalleled. It’s truly remarkable what these mechanical timepieces can actually withstand. For me it really is the ultimate pilot’s watch and it’s exciting to still be testing the boundaries of the possible with such an innovative and technically excellent British business at the centre of aeronautical and military engineering.”

The test instrument that was developed captured the imagination of both Bremont and Martin-Baker who have subsequently decided to launch it in its own right, and so was born the Limited Edition MB Viper, a lightweight model crafted from titanium and anodised aluminium.

The MB Viper is notably the first model in Bremont’s iconic Martin-Baker range to house an ENG300 movement which is visible through its flat exhibition case back. The 43.5mm matte DLC Grade 5 titanium case employs a protective carbon coating and features an anodised 6082 aluminium case middle. Limited to only 300 pieces, the MB Viper not only showcases a different design direction for Bremont but is a true embodiment and representation of what the brand has achieved in its design, engineering, and manufacture.

Within the new Viper, the self-winding ENG352 calibre boasts a 65-hour power reserve with silicon escape wheel, free sprung hairspring with inertia weight timed balance and KIF shock protection. The movement features rhodium plated bridges with a gold-plated automatic bridge and is encased by Bremont’s trusted rubberised Anti-Shock mount that was developed back in 2009 when the brand first started working with Martin-Baker.

The MB Collection remains to this day the only mechanical timepieces to have undergone and withstood the rigours of live ejection seat launches. Martin-Baker, the British aviation company responsible for supplying over 70% of the western world’s Air Forces with fighter ejection seat technology, is at the very pinnacle of British engineering and innovation; the now iconic Bremont MB range has redefined the aviation watch world. Never has a mechanical watch gone through such extensive testing.

The Bremont MB Viper is available here: www.bremont.com for £5,495

As we all head off on our adventures we consider what we can use to keep our watches safe when travelling.

As the opportunity to travel is now becoming more possible and many of us are starting to venture further afield, the big question looms in our minds – ‘how do I take and protect additional watches with me?’ Although internet forums are awash with a plethora of home grown solutions including using the use of socks (preferably fresh unworn ones) there are of course a number of slightly more elegant and trustworthy solutions available to protect your most prized possessions.

There are clearly a lot of options to choose from and whether you are travelling with a single watch or an entire collection there are options that will suit you and your circumstances differently. There are important considerations before you choose which type of watch storage is going to meet your needs. If for example your watches include ones with integrated rubber or steel bracelets, you will need a solution where the watch is secured around a cushion, watch pillow or tube.

Alternatively, if you are the type to go off off adventuring rather than a weekend break at the Ritz, you will probably want something that will protect the watches from being knocked or adversely damaged by either extreme weather or other risks. We have tried to explore the market and highlight what we think represents the best selection of options across a broad price spectrum, number of watches and protection offered.

RENITOR SINGLE WATCH CASE

The Renitor single watch case brings benefits from not only protecting a watch you want to travel with but has been designed to include a space big enough to accommodate 1 to 2 straps as well as a strap changing tool. It takes up the smallest possible size while providing just enough space for all the essentials – perfect for that weekend getaway. This will allow you to “wear-one take-one” plus a couple of straps. Its small enough to chuck in a bag and not take up much space while offering the maximum protection for your watch. Ideal for a weekend getaway where you might want one watch for general activities and another for dinner.

Observations: For us this is a game changer. A single watch case with space for a watch, straps and a tool – all while providing an extremely robust level of protection allowing you to travel worry free at a truly accessible price point.

Dimensions: 139mm x 100mm x 57mm
Price: £28.99
Available from: www.amazon.co.uk

TO THE HOUR – THREE WATCH CASE

‘To the hour’ was set up as a sub brand of ‘The Case Farm’ who in fact were set up by Peli-Products UK (The UK distributor of PELI & Storm cases) in response to the rising demand for specialist cases. There are three product ranges that ‘To The Hour’ offer – the Enigma range, the elements range and the vault range. Both the elements and the vault range are based on the mainstream Peli protector cases with the enigma range being based on the Peli Micro cases. The sweet spot in the range for us is this three watch Enigma case that has enough space to take three watches with you while providing maximum protection. Unfortunately there isnt any room for straps or accessories, but the case allows you to pack three watches in to the smallest space while maximising the protection offered. This case is covered by Peli’s lifetime guarantee and is crushproof, waterproof, dust proof and includes an air pressure equalisation valve ensuring your case stays closed and secure even in the event of a rapid change of atmosphere. There are the usual external amenities allowing you to strap or clip this to another bag, however given that its probably going to be protecting your most valuable timepieces, we’d advise you pack this inside your luggage!

Observations: Due to the size and spacing of the cushions within the case, it is able to accommodate even the largest of watches including a 45mm Panerai. Unfortunately this doesn’t have any space for tools, straps or other accessories, however this does offer arguably the best protection for three watches backed by a lifetime warranty and for under £70 – and we think this is a bargain!

Dimensions: 238mm x 141mm x 67mm
Price: £69.99
Available from: www.tothehour.com

BLACK CHEST – FOUR WATCH CASE

The BlackChest 4 watch case is designed to take 4 watches plus a plethora of straps, tools and accessories with you in perfect safety. The case is based on a Nanuk 904 case with a multi-layer custom foam insert (available in a number of colour options). The outside of the case features two positive locking latches that cannot be accidentally popped open, a pressure equalisation value and a carry handle. On the inside, the top layer provides storage and protection for 4 watches and an additional covered section to hold straps and tools. However, removing this top layer reveals another storage layer below with three compartments suitable for more straps, tools, springbars and cloths. This is smaller than many other 4-watch cases providing robust and rugged protection for 4 watches and all the associated accessories you could want.

Observations: This is a terrific case offering space for multiple watches, tools, straps and everything else you may need. It is worth noting that the watch cushions are fairly closely spaced which means if you have large watches they might be in danger of knocking each other while in transit. We have been in conversation with Blackchest who have taken our feedback and are prototyping an alternative internal layout to address this issue. We will update this article when we have seen these updates.

Dimensions: 213mm x 152mm x 94mm
Price: ££119
Available from: www.blackchest.co.uk

PELI – SIX WATCH CASE

The Peli 6 watch case is based on the brands Peli protector 1200 case and is ideal if you are travelling with 5-6 watches. As with all Peli products cases, this is covered by Peli’s lifetime guarantee and is crushproof, waterproof, dust proof and includes an air pressure equalisation valve. The watch pillows are wide enough to accommodate 6 fairly wide watches up to and including a 45mm Panerai Radiomir. Each watch including the case and crown are fully recessed into the pocket eliminating the risk of watches touching each other during transportation.

Observations: With such great protection on offer, the only drawback is that this does not include space for additional straps, tools, springbars or other accessories.

BREMONT SAFECASE

The largest case that we have here is the Bremont Safecase. This is designed to store and transport up to 8 watches as well as numerous straps, tools, cloths and accessories with complete protection. The outside of the case features two positive action clasps to secure the case closed and cannot be inadvertently opened, a handle and an air pressure equalisation valve as well as a transparent nameplate allowing you to personalise the case. On the inside the lid contains a bespoke foam protective layer embossed with the Bremont Logo within the embossed Union Jack. The main layer has space for 8 watches with ample space between them assuring that even in the event of a flight crew having a very bad day on an airline, there is no possibility of the watches knocking or damaging each other. The cushions are engineered to a fine tolerance ensuring they are a tight fit which is nice and allows you to orientate the watches towards you should you wish to use this as a display case. The high density foam used has a bespoke embossing pattern which is nice and renders individual ‘cells’ for each watch and cushion.

Removing the top layer reveals a lower layer with plenty of space for many straps, tools, spring bars and any other accessories that you may wish to travel with or keep with your watches.

Observations: This is a well designed and manufactured case that gives the assurance of extreme protection, however due to the fit of the foam within such high tolerances, it can be difficult to remove the top layer to access the layer below without first removing a number of watches as there is nothing to grip or hold on to. Overall this is a high quality case offering great protection for 8 watches along with plenty of space for accessories.

Dimensions: 430mm x 340 x 190mm
Price: £295
Available from: www.bremont.com

bremont bridle leather 3 watch roll

The Bridle leather three watch roll from Bremont is a more traditional watch roll design securing the watches around a central cushion encased within a textured leather outer. However what sets this apart from traditional leather watch rolls is the design of the interior which provides an internal compartment large enough to store and transport a plethora of straps, tools and spare spring bars. This provides a more elegant and refined aesthetic while also delivering a level of practicality. The leather is soft to the touch and the closure uses a traditional Bremont buckle.

Observations: While this doesn’t offer the most extreme protection for the watches contained within, it does deliver one of the best all round solutions allowing you to travel with any type of watch (including integrated bracelets) in a more refined leather case with space for everything else you might need.

Dimensions: 205mm x 83mm
Price: £165
Available from: www.bremont.com

zaidmade Watch ROll

Zaid’s handmade leather watch rolls provide a flexible traditional solution for watch travel. Using soft supple leather this will protect up to 4 watches against scuffs and scratches and take up virtually no space when its not in use. Alternatively due to the unstructured nature, one of more of the pockets can be used for straps, cloths or tools.

Observations: While this is designed as a simple, elegant, and traditional solution for protecting watches while you travel, it won’t offer much protection against knocks, bumps or other more substantial threats that might compromise your watches. It is however a low cost hand made solution that will patina over time for a soft rich elegant aesthetic.

The M-12 tool watch roll is a 4 watch roll up fabric watch roll that will accommodate and protect up to 4 watches. It is inspired by vintage WWII US Military tool rolls dating from between 1934-45. With its distinct military look and feel, it has been crafted from canvas and features a soft synthetic suede interior and a reinforced stud and plate closure. In the hands this is extremely well made. Its thick enough to protect the watches inside from all but the harshest of knocks and bumps while still maintaining the charm and aesthetic of a fabric watch roll.

Observations: The closure is a very nice touch and keeps the watch roll firmly secured while in transit although this prevents it from laying flat once unrolled. The combinations of fabric ensure that this is usefully robust whilst ensuring its soft to the touch where it matters – on the surfaces protecting your watches. We have seen and held cheap imitations of this and they are a world apart. This is beautiful sympathetic travel solution for military watches offering a good level of protection. You can of course use one of the compartments for additional straps and tools instead of a 4th watch making this a flexible option.

The Bark&Jack Cocoa Brown Watch Roll is is a beautifully soft and refined leather watch roll handmade in Florence, Italy in calfskin and sued leather. It provides 6 individual compartments for watches, straps or tools. and also comes with 6 leather inserts that can be placed between the watch and bracelets to prevent the bracelet scratching the back of the watch which is a nice touch. The closure uses a hook and loop system (Velcro) to secure the roll closed which is fuss free although when full and containing 6 watches, there is substantially less to

Observations: The leather is beautifully soft and when open, offers a great surface to protect your watches while you switch straps and replace spring bars. This is a compact way of travelling with up to 6 watches without taking up too much room, however as with other fabric rolls, this will not offer more than scratch and superficial knock protection for your watches.

Final observations

These travel storage solutions offer varying degrees of protection for watches and accessories ranging from scratch protection to an almost indestructible case at price points from under £30 to £300 for up to 8 watches. There are larger sizes of some of these cases available which you will find on the websites listed for each product including the ‘Vault XXI’ offered by Peli allowing you to store and travel with up to an astonishing 21 watches – although who would want to travel with 21 watches (other than a watch dealer) is beyond me.
However, should you wish to check this out it is available here: www.tothehour.com

A final word of caution. Even though some of these cases seem to offer extreme protection for your watches backed by a lifetime guarantee, your watches might be in more peril than you realise! Those of us with small children might be able to relate to the warranty exclusions listed by Peli whose legendary lifetime warranty has certain exclusions…

We spend a week in paradise with a trio of Bremont watches exploring their similarities, differences and what makes them special.

Brennia Kottefaru is one of the Maldives newest luxury 5 star islands. Described in the National Geographic Traveller ‘Luxury Collection 2022’ as “…the ultimate luxury island escape where guests’ every wish and whim is catered to.” Located on the island of Kottefaru within the Raa Atoll, with powdery white sand beaches, this was going to be the setting of my Honeymoon. As icing on the cake, Bremont had kindly provided me with a couple of dive watches to take with me and spend some time with in this idyllic setting.

Kottefaru Island in the Maldives: our home for the week.

With the relatively recent release of the Supermarine S302 adding a second time zone, and the latest S300 VIGO and KAIMU paying tribute to the white sand beaches of northern Spain and the black sands of the world renown Hawaiian volcanic black sand beach, I wanted to take a little time with the original Supermarine S300 White and the Supermarine S301 – which to me are some of the most versatile and wearable watches in Bremont’s’ collection. Not to mention the fact that the S300 white was worn by Nims (Nirmal Purja) as he broke more than 7 speed world records as he climbed the 14 mountains above 8,000m (known as the death zone). If you’ve not seen it I would highly encourage you to watch the documentary ’14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible’ on Netflix on his remarkable achievement.

In addition, I also took along my Bremont MBII which I’ve had for a number of years which made a handy trio to spend the week with, and explore their similarities and differences in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Our trip would start in the UK and have us travel some 5372 miles on two planes and a seaplane to a remote island in the middle of the Indian ocean for a week of rest, relaxation, and refinement. To be honest – both my wife and I love to travel and so after more than 2 years of not being able to, as a couple of big kids we absolutely loved the journey there with the seaplane as the icing on the cake.

Upon arrival as it was later in the day we were taken to our Villa where we dumped our bags and headed straight for dinner. One of the first things that struck me (being particularly used to the seasons in the UK) was just how quickly it went dark. Once the sun had gone down, it was pretty much pitch black and a little after 7 in the evening – this was clearly quite a contrast from UK summer weather that we had just left where it’s currently light until some time past 10 at night.

The following day it was time to start relaxing and exploring and with that came my daily choice of what to wear and which watch to spend some time with. It was only then did we realise that we had in fact almost got the entire island to ourselves, as at this point we were only the third couple on the whole island and we had at our disposal some 200 staff looking after us!

So lets start with a few details. Both the S300 and the S301 have a 40mm wide and 13mm high Trip-Tick three piece case, with a DLC treated black barrel, and a laser engraved ceramic unidirectional bezel with Super-LumiNova®. Each has a signed crown with a colour ring that accentuates the colour of the watch. This is a tasteful attention to detail that is more noticeable on the S301 as the muted gold ring echoes the tones across the dial, bezel and NATO strap perfectly. However on the S300 White, the coloured ring on the crown appears observably black – which pairs with the black barrel rather than the blue bezel.

The S300 (across all the variants) have roman indices at the 12, 6 & 9, and batons at the remaining hour indicators all in Super-LuniNova whereas the S301 has a unique hour marker at 12, batons at 6 and 9 and round pips for the remaining hour indicators. While the S301 has matte dial with all text written directly on the dial, the S300 White has a stepped dial adding a subtle level of depth to the view with the centre of the dial presenting a guilloche finishing. Another nice attention to detail is the matching of the date wheel colour to that of the dial. On the S300 white the date wheel is white and on the S301 its black. Likewise there are also differences with the bezels. Whereas the S300 white has a highly polished blue ceramic bezel, the S301 has a matte finished bezel.

Powering the watch is Bremont’s BE-92AE – this is ostensibly a modified ETA 2892 with Bremont’s decorated rotor, a Glucydur balance and Anachron balance spring, with Nivaflex 1 mainspring delivering a 38 hour minimum power reserve. Nothing earth shattering about the movement, but solid, reliable, tried and tested all the same. Both are ISO3159 certified (the ISO certification that COSC uses). Both naturally have hacking and hand winding and are regulated to -4 +6 seconds per day in line with their ISO3159 certification.

Over the course of a week both my wife and I enjoyed the opportunity to wear each watch and spend time with it as we sunbathed, swam, snorkelled and dined in one of the most amazing parts of the world. Whereas my MBII was clearly a larger watch than my wife was comfortable wearing, the very accessible size of the S300 and S301 at 40mm made them a fantastically versatile pair to be worn by either of us. Both of us noted the great versatility of both watches.

While my wife has a tendency to be drawn to a classically white dial watch, I found myself drawn more to the S301’s muted tones. Perhaps this was in part due to the environment that I was spending so much time in where the bronze & brown felt ever so appropriate for sandy beaches, panama hats and khaki attire. Before departing to the Maldives, my initial perception was that the white dial of the S300 would be a dressier and more flexible watch however over the course of the week, I found myself continuously favouring the more understated appearance of the S301.

While daytime activities varied throughout the week from swimming and snorkelling to sunbathing and resting, the evening activities were more focused on the rather incredible supply of sumptuous food and drink that Brennia had to offer. With an assortment of world class chefs at our disposal, our every whim was catered for – including tailoring everything for us as my wife is gluten free – which they did to perfection.

There were certainly times throughout the week where I felt I was enjoying the luxuries of a bond lifestyle – the weather, the views, the food and drink, an easy smile and an expensive watch on my wrist – here the Bremont S301 was right at home with a rugged yet charming appeal.

There are a lot of watches that occupy the same price range as the S300 and 301, but after having spent a week with them what really stands out and sets them apart is the attention to detail. There is nothing ‘simple’ in terms of the watch design and execution. From the design of the three piece Trip-Tick case and the hardening process that it undergoes, to the coloured ring in the crown, the coloured inlay in the matte ceramic bezel, the stepped guilloche dial and the beautifully engraved case back with the Supermarine Seaplane. The whole watch has had no expense spared and what’s noticeable is that these elements all work together really well to deliver a design that is singularly unlike anything else at this price point. Bremont are often the subject of criticism due to a lack of inhouse movement however it would be extremely short sighted to equate a sense of value merely on the movement itself, and its easy to see that Bremont have invested substantially on design and materials to produce a stunning watch that is simply ‘set apart’ in terms of design and execution.

So how do these two compare to my White MBII…? well for starters they are arguably more wearable – the 40mm case dimension certainly makes wearing the Supermarine much more accessible for smaller wrists and therefore more appealing to women (who typically have smaller wrists than men). In addition, for any underwater activities, the presence of a screw down crown really does provide a sense of reassurance. I am acutely aware that my MBII is in fact tested to 100m and had I not had these two divers with me, I might have ventured into the water with it – but as I had a couple of great dive watches with me, I clearly had no need to test the MBII in that way.

However what is abundantly clear is that the same overall sense of build quality, attention to detail, legibility and performance that I am used to with my MBII is very much present on these two at a significantly more affordable price point.

One of the much more interesting aspects of Bremont as a brand is their use of their brand ambassadors – who help them test their products in the real world – in part the source of the brands tag line “Tested Beyond Endurance” (rather than merely modelling on the cover of a magazine wearing the watch for aesthetics). Not only did Nims wear the S300 for his record breaking (or should I say record smashing) climb, but the S300 is also on the wrist of Bremont Ambassador Kristin Harila who is following in Nim’s footsteps to not only become the fastest woman to climb all 14 peaks, but also to beat Nims record! – You can read more about her Bremont 14 peaks challenge here

If you’re in the market for a 40mm dive watch and are considering the myriad of watches that occupy this price point, it would be wise advice to go and check out your options in person before committing your hard earned funds merely based on pictures and other peoples opinions (including my own) and, in this light, I would encourage you to go and take a look for yourself at the Bremont S300 and S301.

Bremont go bronze with the Broadsword...

In early 2019 at the Bremont townhouse evet, Bremont released the Broadsword – a spiritual successor and contemporary take to the ‘Dirty Dozen’ series of watches, produced for the British Army during World War Two when Britain’s Ministry of Defence commissioned 12 companies to produce watches for them to MoD specifications. This was a proud moment for Bremont who formed an official partnership with the Ministry of Defence – to be recognised as the only luxury watchmaker allowed to use the signs symbols and Heraldic badges of all three services; the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force.

Now in 2020, Bremont is introducing the Broadsword Bronze timepieces adding to the original lineup of Bremont’s Armed Forces Collection.

The new bronze editions are available in three different coloured dial and strap variations. These are ‘slate’, ‘sotek’ (a military green/teal colour) and ‘tobacco’ with complementing straps. The new Broadsword case is made of CuSn8 bronze, a solid solution strengthened copper alloy with 8% tin. The high tin content adds to strength, wear and resistance to corrosion. The caseback is the same as the steel variant – namely a 316L steel caseback with embossed detailing of the three services – The Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air force. Inside, the watch is powered by the same ISO 3159 Certified Chronometer movement that powers its steel sister – the modified BE-95-2AV beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour.

Having spent some time with the new Broadsword Bronze over the last week prior to its launch along with the regular Broadsword, the difference that the material of the new Bronze case makes is remarkable. Where every intentional design line, crease and shape on the original steel case is sharp and crisp, here the case feels notably warmer and softer to the touch. Over time this will continue to patina and change as the Bronze case matures and is handled over the years granting each individual watch its own persona – wearing its life for all to see and admire.

A green dial isn’t something that I would have naturally chosen. Although i do like variety of styles and colours so that I have a watch for almost every occasion, I could be accused at times of ‘playing it safe’ with my choices so far being predominantly black or white dials. However this sotek teal dial is quite frankly a superb choice for complementing the warm tones of the Bronze case and the brown strap. In differing lights, the dial takes on a dark grey persona and in much brighter lighting the deep rich teal can easily be seen.

With an almost vintage feel but with modern specifications, the aesthetic and identity of this watch feel unique yet reassuringly familiar. Putting it on a NATO feels right at home as the watch is just 12.5mm thick allowing it to be worn on a good quality NATO without being overly high on the wrist.

The more time I spend with this watch the more time I want to spend with it. This might be seen as a bold move for Bremont as the Broadsword has been in high demand (something we predicted) since it launched early last year and although Bremont have ventured into precious metals (including platinum, gold and rose gold) – this is a tool watch through and through – one which just happens to suit bronze remarkably well!

All three dial choices pair beautifully with the new case and straps. but we can only speak from our experience of the teal dialed sotek which received a huge admiration from those that saw it. The Bronze case adds a charm and character that will continue to patina over time without detracting from the existing appeal of the Broadsword and its tool watch abilities. However we would thoroughly recommend a trip to Bremont to take a look in person at the three and make up your own mind. – Just be prepared to add one to your wish list!

10 years ago in 2009, Bremont launched the iconic Martin Baker I with a red barrel designed and tested to withstand the tremendous forces that pilots undergo upon ejecting from a modern jet fighter. Exclusively available to prior ejectees, the MBI is easily identified by its red barrel and can only be purchased once you have been verified as having survived a live ejection. Subsequently Bremont launched the MBII available to civilians and with a variety of barrel colours available including orange, green, black and blue (paired with a white face) and identical to the MBI from a technical perspective.

The MBIII adds a GMT hand and differs from the MBII as it includes the date but not a day complication. Until today, the MBIII was only available with a black dial.

Today at their annual Townhouse event, Bremont announced their partnership with the Ministry of Defence and in celebration of this, their new Armed Forces Collection.

The new HMAF (Her Majesty’s Armed Forces) collection signifies a significant step in the evolution of Bremont’s relationship with Her Majesty’s Government. Until now, although Bremont has been commissioned to produce one off pieces by specific military units uniquely for them, Bremont have not had a formal relationship with the Ministry of Defence. Today that changes. Bremont is proud to announce its partnership with the Ministry of Defence honouring Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. Through this partnership, Bremont has become the sole luxury watch producer allowed to legitimately use the signs, symbols and insignia of all three services. This is also the first time that civilians can purchase official Bremont military timepieces bearing these symbols.
